BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Scientist II, Genomics in San Jose, California
Job Description SummaryThe Scientist II is an integral member of the single cell genomics Product Development R&D team and is responsible for assisting in the development and evaluation of new single cell genomic assays, enhancements to existing assays, and instrument protocols. This scientist will assist in the execution of assay development experiments, and use independent data analysis and judgement to adapt and modify standard assay development techniques to solve assay or protocol challenges. Position also involves the ability to execute experiments independently and evaluate, discuss, present and explain material of moderate complexity. Follows established procedures; including standard product development processes. Works under general direction, but may independently determine and define solutions to experimental problems.
Primary duties include the following:
Supports the development of new single cell genomics assays and technologies.
Performs experiments to evaluate and optimize, verify and validate new assay methods, under general supervision of a senior level scientist.
Contributes to the development of new procedures and user guides including writing, editing and providing input.
Follows protocols, prepares technical product development reports and summaries.
Tabulates and analyzes experimental data of moderate complexity.
Presents data at group meetings.
Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects. Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions may cause delays in program schedules.
Develops knowledge of BD Biosciences products through training.
Continues pursuit of molecular biology and genomics knowledge through seminars and webinars.
Participates in functional and cross-functional training to advance technical capabilities.
Participates in training on regulatory issues affecting reagent development. Brings experimental questions/issues to the attention of supervisor.
Promotes a safe work environment. Offers recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment. Participates in Environmental Health & Safety programs. Participates in addressing corrective actions whenever a hazard is identified. Notifies supervisor of all observed unsafe work practices.
Works under general supervision with moderate supervision.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
General knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline.
Specific knowledge of NGS instrumentation and data analysis
Familiarity with product development processes
Familiarity with operation of routine laboratory instruments.
Good understanding of biostatistics and statistical packages.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present data of moderate complexity.
Demonstrated ability to keep accurate and complete laboratory records and logs.
Education and Experience:
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in a biological science discipline
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
