BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Staff Instruments Engineer in San Jose, California

Job Description SummaryBD Biosciences is seeking a highly qualified engineer with demonstrated experience in instrument development to become an integral member of the product development team. The individual will play a key role in prototyping, validation and design of an automated fluid handling instrument for Rhapsody, Becton Dickinson’s next generation platform for highly parallelized RNA-seq analysis of single cell populations. The successful candidate will assist with transition of the technology from research to production, as well as working closely with colleagues in assay development.

Job Description


  • Contribute to development of an automated fluid handling instrument for novel genetic cytometry systems

  • Perform mechanical instrument design using CAD tools

  • Assist in the development of architecture for new fluidic systems

  • Define engineering specifications based on customer needs (VOC), product requirements, and design constraints

  • Generate and execute test protocols, analyze data, preparation of reports and presentations at cross functional meetings

  • Hands on development and testing of components and systems

  • Design systems with an emphasis on design manufacturability and serviceability within a cost target


  • BS or MS degree in engineering + min 5 yrs experience

  • Demonstrated experience in CAD design (Solidworks, Pro/E, or similar)

  • General understanding of PDM and PLM practices, change control and change effectivity

  • Demonstrated experience in instrument development

  • Hands-on person adept at problem solving and troubleshooting

  • Strong communication skills including the ability to create written documentation and deliver technical presentations to a diverse audience

  • Strong analytical skills
