As a Staff Mechanical Engineer in the R&D group, you will apply working knowledge of dynamic systems, instrument design and engineering principles to design optimal solutions for our scientific research products. You will apply your creativity, knowledge and expertise to develop simple and effective solutions to our automation and instrument challenges. You will proactively design, integrate and test your solutions to support system level performance. Your versatility, independence, attention to detail, and high output will accelerate our products to market. You will regularly collaborate cross-functionally with internal and external engineering teams. You will drive the design for this highly visible, business critical product through all phases of the development cycle. Previous experience in life science or clinical instrumentation is not required.
Job responsibilities include:
Design, document, build and test mechanical engineering solutions including motion control, instrument design, and fluid management.
Derive system level requirements into sub-assembly engineering specifications
Direct and perform testing to verify your design meets specifications.
Manage successful 3rd party development of successful engineering solutions
Collaborate internally and externally with electrical, firmware and software engineering to integrate and deliver a comprehensive automation solution.
Apply best practices in design, drawings, assembly and test documentation.
Managing your design evolution cleanly using proper design control and PDM tools.
Strategically prioritize, plan and estimate work with limited oversight.
Clearly and objectively communicate with R&D peers, leadership, NPI and manufacturing stakeholders.
Manage suppliers for timely and quality solutions.
Ensure compliance to the company's Global Product Development System and design control requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
Minimum of 10 years' experience in mechanical engineering and instrument design preferably involving dynamic mechanical systems and automation.
Life science and medical industry experience a plus.
Experience applying and learning new engineering tools for programming motion control scripts, data logging and acquisition.
Experience in biological samples and fluid handling.
Strong aptitude regarding manufacturing, assembly and customer ergonomics. Designing for assembly, manufacturing and servicing.
Proficient application of SolidWorks for clean, efficient documentation including model based BOM’s, cabling, and assembly instructions.
Molded part design, simulation, animations, or finite element analysis a plus.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to field challenging questions in a public setting.
