Job Description Summary
BD Biosciences (BDB) is a global leader in solutions which enable transformative treatments for cancer and infectious disease. BDB is the leader in technological advances uncovering the single cell nature of disease including flow cytometry instrumentation, reagents and software solutions for research and clinical applications as well for single cell genomics and gene profiling applications. We are searching for a Vice President of Software to lead multiple high-performance teams across the globe, driving our growing investment in instrumentation and application software. This role will report to the Worldwide Vice President for Research and Development and will also contribute to managing the broader R&D organization as part of the BDB R&D Leadership Team.
We are searching for a proven, seasoned engineering leader to drive and operationalize BDB’s multi-year software roadmap, and set a vision for development of BDB’s next generation software solutions. This includes software used for instrumentation control, data acquisition, data analysis, and cloud-based platforms. You will lead a team chartered with creating complex software solutions that scientists and clinicians use for advanced acquisition and analysis of high-dimensional flow cytometry, image cytometry, protein, and gene expression data using bleeding edge technologies. Your team will also be responsible for managing the life cycle of in-market SW products, global product security of all BDB systems, applications and service development.
The Software Engineering organization within R&D is responsible for the creation, development, design, and maintenance of BD Biosciences’ software products in coordination with the analysis of market trends and developments. This position ultimately requires an in-depth understanding of all business functional areas, segment and business unit strategies, and ultimately the broader goals of Becton Dickinson and Co. You will be accountable for leading a large organization with responsibilities for highly complex software products, and introducing novel solutions to unmet healthcare and research market needs.
In this role, you will:
Lead a global team of about 120 Engineers across California, Oregon, Ireland, and India in execution of a broad portfolio of new products and support of existing in-market systems.
Build and Lead a high performance software engineering organization with a strong leadership bench and world class software engineering talent.
Collaborate with customers, internal stakeholders, other R&D teams and business functions as well as members of business leadership to develop and implement a cohesive and impactful software product strategy.
Lead the development and execution of the multi-year software roadmap and set a vision for development of BDB’s next generation software solutions. Contribute to drive the technical direction of multiple product platforms and software applications.

You should have:
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Software Engineering or a Computer Science related field. MS degree and Ph.D. a plus. An MBA is a plus.
Experience as a high performance leader with a tangible history of delivering results. 10+ years of experience in complex instrumentation software control, data analytics, cloud / service development /product management experience as a product / program management leader. Candidates with equivalent, demonstrable experience in delivering exceptional solutions to customers will also be considered.
A minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience with increasing responsibility in a variety of product development or business management positions.
A background in immunology, cell & molecular biology or related fields will be a strong advantage.

Extensive experience developing software products both in a Phase Gated Product Development process as well as modern Agile execution and administration methodologies such as Scrum and SAFe.
Experience contracting with, and managing, third party software consultants, collaborators, and partners globally.
Experience in the development of complex instrument systems involving software, electronics, fluidics and optics, ideally in a healthcare, medical technology or life sciences area.
Ability to strategically attract and recruit top software talent within highly competitive environments, such as the San Francisco Bay Area.
