Program Overview

The BD SkillBridge Fellowship Program provides opportunities for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual Fellowships during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days.

The SkillBridge Fellow will experience:

Our SkillBridge Program consists of 3 cohorts per year, starting in January, May, and August. The Fellowship is designed to be 3 months in duration, however, can be flexible based on the service member’s remaining active-duty time and special circumstances. After successful completion of the program there may be an opportunity to convert to a full-time position.

We understand that service members might not be familiar with all the various functions and roles within a company. On acceptance into the program the SkillBridge Fellowship Program Management staff (consisting of mostly all veterans) will provide guidance, mentorship, and work closely with the Fellow for integration into the BD culture.

GENERAL FUNCTION

Responsible for leading the activities of a high-volume manufacturing operation and building a high performing team of production associates. Achieves department’s Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, & People goals through leadership and teamwork.

Work Hours

  • Rotating 12 hour night shift

  • 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM

  • Biweekly rotating “2-3-2 Pitman” schedule to include three days off every other weekend.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads the activities of a high-volume manufacturing operation

  • Takes ownership for the performance and results of the shift and department.

  • Creates organizational clarity and empowers the team to make good decisions.

  • Communicates department goals, objectives, and initiatives to the production floor in a simple and concise manner.

  • Defaults to action. Remains calm and makes decisions in ambiguous and complex situations.

  • Exercises humility and servant leadership.

  • Solves problems and coaches the team to solve problems.

  • Ensures a safe working environment, enforces safety policies. Processes accident reports.

  • Ensures manufactured products meet the established quality requirements. Works with the Quality team to implement new or revised quality plans.

  • Works effectively up and down the management chain to accomplish goals

  • Strategically utilizes the team’s skillsets to achieve operational success.

  • Exhibits a Continuous Improvement (CI) mindset. Drives to consistently improve self and team.

  • Manages training within the department to ensure team members understand and follow Standard Work and Good Manufacturing Practices. Updates and monitors team member learning plans in C2C.

  • Performs regular, timely, and accurate assessments of team members. Provide coaching and candid feedback to the team.

  • Ensures fair and reasonable application of company and departmental policies and practices, such as vacation, sick, attendance and FMLA.

  • Comply with: all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures includes RCRA Hazardous Waste regulations; and all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION:

Supervises a large team of 25-30 team members consisting of:

  • production associates responsible for running the line,

  • maintenance associates responsible for mechanical maintenance,

  • quality associates responsible for in-process sampling,

  • area leaders responsible for general line support.

Qualifications:

  • Must meet all Department of Defense SkillBridge Eligibility requirements

  • Other skills and experience may be required or preferred, depending on the area or role

  • Proven track record of success in military career
