The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation in Integrated Diagnostic Solutions (IDS) institutionalizes the innovations process generating new business opportunities and driving those through the innovation and business development funnel to ensure successful commercialization. This role works closely with Business Group leaders and select functions to articulate the IDS vision and compile the IDS strategy along with robust portfolio management to ensure optimal resource allocation and Return on Investment. He/She will lead the validation and development of new strategic growth initiatives for this Business Unit.
This role presents recommendations to the IDS Portfolio Management Team (PMT), WW Leadership Team, and the BD Management Committee in the form of executive briefings, Business Cases, and Integrated Business Plans.
Develop and implement the pipeline of New Ideas (NI) in our key hunting grounds. These are high value/high growth opportunities in the field of Integrated Diagnostics.
Lead technology scouting activities to serve the objectives of Business Unit strategies.
Build the vital reporting tools to enable executive communication at the Business Unit, Segment, and Corporate Leadership Team levels.
Identify, develop, and pursue opportunities to improve strategy, process, execution, and organization of the innovation process.
Lead and seek collaboration efforts with other BD Innovation functions, Medical Affairs and/or Strategic Marketing groups and outside institutions and firms.
Identify potential licensing/partnership/acquisition targets. Actively run the licensing/partnership process, working with business, legal and finance teams to develop investment theses/business cases and execute the contracts.
Leading the IDS Innovation System:
Lead the Innovation system from new space identification, to conceptualization, to early development by brainstorming on high level medical/clinical unmet needs, creative tools / workshops, qualitative and quantitative testing.
Establish appropriate and robust market research techniques enabling a reliable and timely evaluation of new insights.
Build a network of innovation sponsors and Innovators across IDS.
Drive the building of strategic profiles and business cases for market assessment of new opportunities.
Develop and diligently manage detailed budgets and in accordance with project and organization plans as well as business objectives.
Define and monitor metrics to measure progress against business objectives and quickly identify and mitigate gaps.
Ensure awareness of roadmap, projects, products, technologies, and capabilities. Identify and use connections, expertise, experiences, and resources where appropriate.
Conduct and encourage frequent formal and informal communication within the group to ensure full engagement and efficient operation.
Promote and use diversity to achieve the best outcomes. Ensure all interested parties have opportunities to influence and contribute to decisions and outcomes.
Required skills, experiences and leadership traits:
Bachelor's degree required, technical degree preferred. MBA/Master's Degree preferred.
7+ years of proven experience in business development, start-up creation or healthcare consulting and 5 years project management with successful experience in delivering products required. Experience in the medical device and/or Pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
Advanced leadership skills, inclusive of strong interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills is required.
Advanced problem solving skills and a strong team orientation is required.
Project Planning and Project/Portfolio Management experience required.
Broad and deep understanding of focused product development processes, regulatory, and quality requirements.
