Job Description Summary

As a Hot Extrusion Technical Associate you will set-up, maintain and operate Regrind, Mill, and Extruders equipment in the Rubber Department. Assist where needed at the Banbury, Regrind and Extrusion Operations. This will include 3rd Floor Batch-Up Mixing, Banbury Mixing, Mill, Batch-Off, Extrusion, and Regrind. This position will provide the necessary manning required where needed to meet production and quality standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Batch-Up Mixing Operations:

  • Keep ingredient hoppers and oil systems supplies at proper levels.

  • Supply minor ingredients to 2nd floor area for Banbury usage.

  • Maintain necessary records for proper lot and batch traceability.

Banbury Operations:

  • Set-up mixer and auxiliaries as required for a specific mix or formulation using tape or manual control.

  • Inspect mixer to make sure all services are operating (i.e. lubricator, cooling water, dust collector, air supply and process oil).

  • Collect deficiencies and report any breakdown to supervisor.

  • Supply rubber to in-feed conveyor, load minor ingredients in mixer hopper at proper time.

  • Monitor operation of automatic loading, mixing and discharge system for any miscellaneous loads of ingredients.

  • Record necessary data in operating log provided.

  • Operate hand and electrical trucks to move and relocate materials as necessary.

  • Maintain daily machine downtime log.

Mill Operations:

  • Inspect mill to make sure all services are operating, i.e. safety stops, lubricator and cooling water.

  • Report any malfunction to Supervisor or Technician immediately .

  • Operate mill as follows: allow batch of rubber to drop completely through mill rollers.

  • Reload batch on mill, cross blend as needed to obtain uniform dispersion of stock.

  • Position mill knives and strip off batch to cooling system.

  • Cut and deliver QC samples as required.

  • Maintain batch and/or lot history documentation; label all samples with correct identification.

  • Maintain dip tank for the cooling conveyor system.

  • Assist batch-off operator in maintaining of production standard for rubber stock and batch-off cooling unit.

  • Perform required PM’s.

Extrusion Operations :

  • Set-up Extruder to produce pellets as set-up in standards, and specifications.

  • Check the slurry contents as per standards.

  • Monitor extruding and pelletizing operation to standard set-up. Report any problems to Supervisor/Lead.

  • Load totes with pellets on skid for transfer to cold room.

  • Perform general Preventative Maintenance tasks.

Regrind Operations :

  • Set-up, maintain and operate regrind equipment and all auxiliary processes (washer, granulator, conveyors).

  • Monitor incoming waste material to be processed for correct identification and separation by compound type.

  • Perform particle size analysis of regrind materials per provided test methods.

  • Assign and maintain lot history documentation of all regrind material.

  • Monitor and maintain first in, first out staging and storage of all incoming waste and outgoing regrind materials.

  • Monitor and document liquid nitrogen supply and usage.

  • Perform line clearances and required GMP cleaning.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and work area paying particular attention to oil, waster, cardboard paper and other foreign matter that could contaminate product.

  • Observe all Safety and Environmental Procedures and Quality System Requirements.

  • You must be able to reach, bend and lift 35 lbs. daily. 

  • Must be willing to be trained in other areas of production where the skill level requirements may be lower. 

  • Knowledge and adherence to safety procedures and programs. 

  • Perform other duties as directed by Supervisor, Lead, or business needs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma

  • 2+ years manufacturing environment  or related experience​ required

  • Forklift qualifiable and clean driving record required

  • 6+ months forklift experience preferred

  • Mechanical Proficiency/Skills is required and 1+ years of mechanical experience preferred

  • Good mechanical aptitude, dexterity, and hand/eye coordination

  • Able to read, write and do simple math.

  • Computer literacy

Work Shift:

  • 12 hour Night Shift, 3-2-2-3 schedule

Physical Demands:

  • Standing - Work at the extruder during the entire shift.

  • Walking - Tasks associated with running the extruder.

  • Sitting - While operating forklift, doing paperwork.

  • Lifting up to 50lbs. -Removing shaker trays from conveyor, totes.

  • Carrying up to 45lbs.- Carrying totes of pellets to pallet.

  • Pushing up to 20lbs.- Pushing empty rubber slab cages.

  • Pulling up to 20lbs. -Pulling empty rubber slab cages.

  • Climbing- Color changes, cross over ladders on extruders.

  • Balancing - Color changes, PM’s.

  • Stooping- During daily QSR cleaning assignments.

  • Bending - for access to rubber slab and other tasks.

  • Kneeling, Crouching and Crawling- During daily QSR cleaning assignments.

  • Reaching-While performing color changes on extruders.

  • Handling - Handling rubber components.

  • Manual Dexterity- Using machete to cut rubber slab, scale entries

  • Speaking-General communication.

  • Hearing - General communication, instructions, alarms, etc.

  • Vision Requirements-20/40 Vision, equipment operation.

  • Depth Perception- Working around moving equipment

  • Color Vision- Product color variation, color-coded forms/guides.

Work Environment:

  • BD is a smoke-free campus. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices, marijuana, or tobacco products are not allowed on BD property, grounds or in the parking areas. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this policy

  • False eyelashes, press-on fingernails, and Jewelry is not allowed on the production floor including dermals. Any associate wearing dermals will be required to cover them while working on the production floor.

  • Shoes are required to be Steel Toe and non-slip for all associates while on the production floor for safety purposes.
