Summary/Purpose of Position

The Associate Product Development Scientist is responsible for providing scientific/technical input as part of a larger multi-functional team committed towards the design of novel product design. This individual, along with generating concepts, prototypes, and data to drive the product development process, will also contribute to the documentation for new and improved medical devices.

This individual will be required to function well as part of a diverse team and as an individual contributor as they gain experience working through all the major phases of the product development cycle, starting with Pre-Concept and working up through Product Launch.

Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities

  • Applies the scientific method/process to design and develop new and improved medical devices.

  • Reviews design objectives with marketing and management and assures product design or technology meets user needs.

  • Coordinates the development of prototypes and lab testing samples and fixtures.

  • Formulates and approves product specifications, materials, and processes.

  • Works concurrently with Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality Engineering groups in starting up production of new and improved products.

  • Research external market for information on new materials and processes related to the improvement of existing BD product lines.

  • Participates in design review meetings in accordance with procedures.

  • Responsible for communications to supervisor and other levels of management.

  • Performs and/or supervises development testing.

  • Responsible for supporting design control activities, including user needs assessment, product performance specifications, hazards analysis, DFMEA, design verification and validation.

  • Other projects/tasks as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Biomedical Science/Engineering, or similar field of study.

  • Minimum 0-2 years experience as Product Development Engineer/Scientist, Biomedical Engineer/Scientist, or Product Design Engineer/Scientist in a surgical, medical device, medical technology, or related industry.

  • Knowledge of test method development.

  • Experience with coatings, thin films, hydrogels and other materials is a plus.

  • Ability and desire to work with a diverse, international project team.

  • Possess an innovative mindset and an ability/willingness to think outside the box for unconventional solutions to complex problems.

  • Background and prior hands-on experience with general laboratory practices, common laboratory testing equipment and data analysis techniques.

  • Must be capable of multitasking and balancing multiple different projects either as part of a team or individual contributor.

  • Must have good written and verbal skills to communicate with an audience of mixed technical background/understanding.

  • Experience with Design for Six Sigma/experimental design, Stanford Biodesign Process, and/or other similar methodologies/processes is a plus.
